365 Challenge Update: October

Here at the CBU Art Gallery we have joined the 365 Challenge and made it our mission to take one picture every day.

Today we bring you the October edition of our 365 Challenge! October has been a pretty busy month with the ending of our exhibition Witness Blanket and the opening of Old Trout Funnies. Not to mention the Halloween events hosted by our Art Gallery Society as well as the Blues Slide Guitar workshop (which was really fun to listen to even if you weren’t participating ☺ )! November will be just as eventful with the Handmade Holiday coming up as well as the upcoming Society events.

To stay posted on all the current events in the gallery you can sign up to the Gallery and the Society’s newsletters on the right side bar or save our Google Calendar by clicking here.

Upcoming Exhibition: Witness Blanket

witness blanket

September 8-October 16, 2015
Opening Reception: September 18, 2-4pm

Inspired by a woven blanket, this sculpture is made out of hundreds of items reclaimed from Residential Schools, churches, government buildings, Friendship Centre’s, band offices, treatment centre’s and universities from across Canada. The Witness Blanket stands as a national monument that recognises the atrocities of the Indian Residential School era, whilst honouring the children and symbolising ongoing reconciliation.

Artist Carey Newman travelled with a team across Canada over the course of one year talking with survivors and their families, and collecting artifacts. In all, 887 pieces are included in Witness Blanket collected from 77 communities, with a number of pieces from Nova Scotia, which were donated by survivors, and gathered from the Shubenacadie Residential School and Provincial government buildings.

Managing Partner: Victoria Native Friendship Center. With Contributions from: The Truth & Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, The Rina M. Bidin Foundation, Media One.

Nova Scotia Tour Sponsored by Nova Scotia Communities, Culture & Heritage
